Who will be the winner of the Silver Camera 2011? What was the most outstanding Dutch news photo of 2011? In a year that featured the Arab Spring and its aftermath, the premature death of soul singer Amy Winehouse and terrorist attacks in Norway, the winning photo may be an image either of something that happened abroad or of an event here in the Netherlands. All will be revealed on 22 January, when the winner of the Silver Camera 2011 is announced. Whatever the picture and whoever the winner, he or she will receive a cash prize of EUR 5000. The Canon Prize for Innovative Photojournalism will be awarded for the best example of photojournalism completed in 2011. The winner of this prestigious prize will be a pioneer: an innovating figure who exploits the technological resources of today to achieve advances in the practice of photojournalism. The winning project will be a multimedia production in which photographs are combined with sound and/or video. It may feature a linear narrative or be interactive in nature. The jury will look for a project in which the multimedia aspect (internet, audio and/or video) is of the essence, although it may well be supported by traditional media like books, exhibitions, or features in newspapers and magazines. The jury will shortlist three entries. The eventual winner will receive a prize of EUR 5000 and each of the two runners-up a prize of EUR 1250. For the second year running, the award ceremony will also include the presentation of the Dutch National Portrait Prize (a competition run in collaboration with the Museum of National History of the Netherlands). The prize will go to the photographer judged to have produced the most outstanding portrait of a Dutch man or woman in the last year. The aim of the prize is both to encourage Dutch portrait photography and to create a new collection for the National Portrait Gallery. Entries are not invited. The jury will use its own judgement in shortlisting works for consideration and in selecting the eventual winner (who will receive a sum of EUR 10,000). All Dutch press photographers and foreign photographers working in the Netherlands are eligible to enter for the Silver Camera and its various sub-categories.
