The Photo Academy Award, which was created by Amsterdam's Photo Academy, is an important prize for talented graduating photography students in the Netherlands and Flanders. The prizes this year are substantial, with a first prize of 5,000 euros donated by the VandenEnde Foundation and second and third prizes of 1,250 and 750 euros respectively, donated by The Hague Museum of Photography itself. The Photo Academy Award has a unique format whereby sponsors associate their names with a particular category. This year the nominees are divided into 12 categories, each of which bears the name of the company or institution that sponsors the prize in question. Instead of cash, people that come first in their category can win exhibitions and publications of their own, or paid assignments that are a valuable addition to their portfolio. The judging of the 2010 Photo Academy Award took place on Thursday 1 July. The overall judges for first prize included Carli Hermès, Narda van 't Veer, who both work for the agency UNIT C.M.A., and Wim van Sinderen of The Hague Photo Museum. They had the difficult task of choosing the winner of the 2010 Photo Academy Award. The awards will be announced during a festive award ceremony, at 18.00 on Thursday 9 September at The Hague Museum of Photography. This exciting event will be hosted by Ruben Nicolai. The nominated photos, including the winning ones, will be on show at the museum for two weeks afterwards.

'High quality photography' is what the judges of the 2010 Photo Academy Award concluded. It is this high standard that led to a record number of nominations in the various categories this year. Work was submitted by a total of 175 young photographers from 19 different photography courses in the Netherlands and Belgium. The nominees are students from five Dutch and three Belgian courses. Together the contestants submitted no fewer than 2150 photos and even new categories such as 'Photobook' and 'Multimedia' attracted dozens of entrants. Photos, films and books by all 66 nominees will be prominently displayed in The Hague Museum of Photography in the period 28 August through 26 September.
