To accompany the exhibition Ukrainian Diary by Boris Mikhailov, Fotomuseum Den Haag is organizing a talk about the importance of art and culture in times of war and oppression.
When national borders are under pressure, culture becomes the mainstay for maintaining national identity. This also seems to apply to Ukraine, where the current war against their country forms a new episode in a long series of successive dominations.
Program
Joining us is Michiel Driebergen, a Dutch journalist who works for, among others, the daily newspaper Trouw and the Radio 1 program Bureau Buitenland (VPRO). Driebergen has been reporting from Ukraine for a long time and recently received the prestigious journalistic award, De Tegel, for his work there. We will talk with him about the history of Ukraine and which changes he has seen in the fields of language, art, and culture due to the war.
We will also speak with Tatiana Kochubinska, curator, writer, and teacher with a focus on contemporary Ukrainian art. Her attention is directed towards the influence of Soviet history on contemporary Ukrainian society and culture.
Photographers Alex Blanco and Hanna Hrabarska, both Ukrainian but currently living in the Netherlands, will talk about their photography projects in which longing for Ukrainian culture is central, each in their own way.
The moderation is in the hands of Willa Stoutenbeek.
Drinks and snacks
The talk will end with a get-together where drinks and Ukrainian snacks, based on recipes from Alex Blanco’s mother, will be served. You can also view Blanco’s photo project Meat, Fish & Aubergine Caviar, which is displayed in our lounge where the reception takes place.
The talk is free to attend. If you wish to visit the Ukrainian Diary exhibition beforehand, regular entrance fees apply.
This program is made possible with the support of the V-fonds.
