Ivo van der Bent is a portrait photographer whose clients include major news media like de Volkskrant and De Morgen. When he goes to photograph a new subject, he is frequently offered a cup of coffee before the photo shoot begins. It’s an informal interlude, which Van der Bent uses to grab his first shots. The real work begins later, when he experiments with different settings, poses and expressions.

Koffie? is the result of 138 such ‘interludes’ with well-known Dutch personalities. Twenty-eight of the portraits in the book are now on show in the lounge of Restaurant Gember.

Ivo van der Bent’s book Koffie? is privately published and designed by Floris de Vries. It is available from the Hague Museum of Photography’s in-house bookshop (price €34.50).
