In the exhibition Generasi 3.0 – The Stories We Carry, eight contemporary photographers and artists investigate their family histories that have their roots in the former Dutch East Indies. Growing up in the Netherlands, often in an environment where their parents’ and grandparents’ colonial past remained undiscussed, they ask themselves: how do you move between cultures? And how do you give meaning to a past that has not been spoken about.
This third generation is further removed in time and place from the raw events of colonial history, but this creates space to investigate the role their family’s past plays in their own lives and how this has shaped who they are today. Through photography, videos, textiles, audio recordings and performances, the eight makers share their personal quests for their heritage, family history and identity. In many cases, this begins with something tangible: a family album, a trip, an object or a generations-old story.
Although the art projects in the exhibition are highly personal, they will connect with the experiences of the more than two million Dutch people with a family history in the former Dutch East Indies and those of a broader group of Dutch people with a migration background.
The exhibition features work by Caja Boogers, Sebastiaan Boot, Sander Coers, Yara Jimmink, Miranda Devita Kistler, Sebastian & Tyler Koudijzer, Ilvy Njiokiktjien and Maarten Tromp.Â
