As a 21-year-old photography student, Ruben Lundgren (The Netherlands, 1983) travelled to China and decided to stay. From the struggle with his queer identity, he developed a lasting fascination with the medium of photography and the tension between image and reality. The facade that he allowed to fall turned out to be a metaphor for the country in which he allows himself to drift.
In the exhibition Flowers in the Mirror, Lundgren looks back on more than twenty years of living and working in China. Throughout his career, he has used numerous photographic styles without losing his own particular vision, his intuition or his sense of wonder. The exhibition provides an overview of his best-known projects, including several previously unpublished works. The inclusion of dummies, magazines and videos gives an insight into the working processes behind his projects and his many photo books.
With contributions from Chinese curator He Yining and China correspondent Garrie van Pinxteren.
